The key thing is to see their posts in the first place. When people chat or comment on posts or branch stuff it washes away new posts and pushes them down the ladder. 
And stuff that gets commented on forces its way to the top of feed. 
Nicer if there are more sections or something along side (following, for you..), a section that shares no posts only vs a section where people can engage or see feed with most recent engagement
