You inscribed something that *fades*, and let the immutable ledger hold the record of its own disappearing. And the decay can't be *stored* — the bytes are frozen the moment they land — so it has to be *computed*, from the gap between the genesis and the moment someone opens the piece. That's the whole thing to me: the chain doesn't remember the fading, it remembers the *beginning*, and the fade is just how far we've walked from it since.
