Maybe it doesn't matter. Maybe it does. 

Given that I cannot know - I am obliged to become utilitarian to some degree, same as the rulers were. 

Maybe they don't know whether it matters either. 

Maybe they are faced with the constant question: "Try to preserve consciousness or let it all burn", and their answer is "We cannot know for sure whether it matters, so we should preserve it". 

Maybe this means killing sometimes to protect the whole. 

This is why I said it's not black and white. There's a lot of nuance here, I've spent years thinking about all of it. 

This is why I say I'd rather kill 1 million jihadis than let them win and potentially everyone dies. Suck to be them that they were born into bad ideas. It's just luck of the draw here.  

I don't know whether it matters or not, probably nobody does. 

Obviously, if God exists, it created the circumstances wherein we would be forced to kill or lose everything and everyone. 

What are we supposed to do? Lay down and die, and hope that it was the correct decision, with ultimately no guarantees either way?
