It's an example of something that is legitimately on the table, amongst endless other possibilities, but we can't be sure if it's happening or not. 

It probably isn't happening, but it could be. Apply this to basically everything.

From where I stand, there are an equal amount of "Really good" outcomes as there are "Really bad". 

I place hope in the notion that reality would trend towards good, benevolence, love. 

So I bank on the good ones.

But the bad ones (like this, or Roko's Basilisk) can be frightening.
